What Makes Business Beautiful?

Reflections from friends of the House

“I think what is beautiful is true.” — Thomas Hirschhorn

We at the House believe the future of business is beautiful — and we tend to use the term quite prolifically.

But what does that mean exactly?

We put that question to our House community. Here are some of their responses…

What makes business beautiful?

“An idea that we can create the world we not only want to live in, but thrive in for ourselves and those we employ.”

“Not necessarily a place, but a community that rewards experimentation, failure, and the development of fair communication and critical thinking skills, preparing us for the future.”

“To live. To experience to the full extent our humanness and ephemeral existence. To love, have passion, care for others, be ethical and why not, even suffer and feel pain.”

“Work that strives to build dense layers of gratification into daily experience — where committing to and helping others, learning by doing, and exploring things out of the norm lead to a kind of flow, friendship, mastery and confidence in myself and in those I surround myself with that I don’t find present elsewhere.”

“What makes business beautiful is the people who put their hearts and energy into making it alive. What makes any undertaking beautiful is the harmony and flow of intention, manifestation and exchange. What makes business beautiful is passion and diversity working in harmony.”

“Putting people instead of things first.”

“If it is powered by real talent coupled with humbleness. If it is able to solve real world problems and, finally, if it allows you to grow as a human being.”

“Business becomes beautiful when business contacts turn out to be personal contacts and business topics translate into real life matters.”

“When business profit can also be measured in non-monetary currencies.”

“Integrity. That balance between boldness and humility, between not taking yourself too seriously, but your impact on others seriously enough, a combination of vulnerable honesty and strong principles. With all that, human connection can grow.”

“Business is beautiful because it reflects our own humanity.”

Come imagine with us and explore new futures at the House of Beautiful Business. Taking place in Lisbon, November 3–10th, 2017, the House will host start-up founders, executives, nonprofit leaders, investors, writers, philosophers, scientists, designers, technologists, artists, to discuss and prototype how to lead with purpose and passion; how to build human companies and workplaces; and how to design for deeper connections in an age of exponential change and massive societal disruption.

Hosted in collaboration with the BCG Henderson Institute, the House will serve as salon, stage, and sandbox for people who are keen on rehumanizing business and exploring meaningful conversations around humanity and technology. You can find more information and buy tickets at: houseofbeautiful.biz
